Meditation – Sleep Music

Sleep is a naturally recurring state of body and mind, a state of altered consciousness, less sensory activity, reduced muscle activity and inhibited voluntary muscle activity during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

During sleep, most of the body’s systems are in an anabolic (building up) state, helping to restore the immune, nervous, skeletal and muscular systems – vital processes that maintain mood, memory and cognitive (thinking) functions.

The natural circadian clock (the cycle of light and dark) exerts a constant influence on the body – it is synchronised with solar time and has a direct neural connection to the pineal gland which releases the hormone melatonin at night.  Cortisol levels typically rise throughout the night, peaking in the awakening hours and diminishing during the day.

Humans increasingly suffer from many sleep disorders including insomnia, hypersomnia, narcolepsy and sleep apnoea, sleepwalking, REM sleep behaviour disorder and circadian rhythm sleep disorders.  The use of artificial light, including the screens of electronic devices which emit a large amount of blue light (daytime light), disrupts the release of the hormone melatonin, necessary to regulate the sleep cycle.

Neurologically, even as the body is seemingly resting, the mind is quite active during sleep. The mind unconsciously processes thoughts previously dismissed or put aside as afterthoughts that occurred throughout the active, waked experience of the day.

Slow repetitive rhythms so often can imbue feelings of safety and familiarity that can prepare and induce the brain’s sleep response.  Music has been shown to have an effect on the level of depression in the elderly, and this effect has been directly correlated with sleep.

Theta brain waves are the brain state of REM sleep, hypnosis, lucid dreaming, and the barely conscious state just before sleeping and just after waking. Theta is the border between the conscious and the subconscious world – a state where the mind is capable of deep and profound learning, healing, and growth – removing limiting beliefs and creating positive images.

Even with a regular bedtime routine – in line with your circadian clock – no blue light from electronic screens – and a tranquil place to rest – sleep can be elusive.  Images that you don’t want to remember keep surfacing and won’t go away no matter how hard you try to replace them with positive pictures. Worries go round and round in your head, niggling and keeping you awake – music can disperse those images; we all have different rhythms – find the music that resonates with your brainwaves to help you drift into therapeutic, dreamless slumber.

The diverse purposes and mechanisms of sleep – and the therapeutic effects of music for inducing sleep – are the subject of substantial ongoing research and much has yet to be proved scientifically.  in the meantime, your experience and feedback will be really helpful in collating sufficient data to convince sceptics and help other sufferers and we really appreciate your comments:

So thank you, your content has always helped me & guided me along the way. Thanks, I appreciate it and You”
