Meditation – Managing Anxiety

So many people these days suffer from anxiety in one way or another – anxiety manifests itself in many different ways – it stops us sleeping, it takes away our appetite, it causes eczema, indigestion, stomach pains and IBS.  It makes us irritable and moody and it can cause depression.

So what is anxiety and how can we manage it better?

Anxiety can be caused by lots of things – stress – too much pressure – at work – or at home – a big life event – even happy events like weddings and a new baby can be extremely stressful – moving house or a new job are exciting – but also full of anxiety – and bereavements can be devastating.

Anxiety is sometimes a build-up of emotions that we have not dealt with – traumatic events that wake us up in the night with flashbacks, cause panic attacks and all sorts of phobias.

Meditation is not only calming – it also helps us to process these emotions.  And meditation can take many forms – it’s not just sitting still and trying to empty the mind of thoughts.  Walking with no distractions is a form of meditation, so is driving a well-known route, listening to music, playing music, singing – especially to songs that relate to the emotions you are feeling – and fresh air and exercise.

Writing thoughts down helps us to process emotions, so does talking to someone, like a therapist, who will just listen – and not judge or offer uncalled-for advice.

People are always in ‘play’ mode – sometimes we pause when there is a distraction – but we never stop – when we meditate, we stop, and live in the present moment – this is mindfulness – and it helps us find our emotions, understand and accept them.

Different strategies work for different people in different ways – and our subscribers find some tracks created at different hertz work better than others.

Being on your own – enjoying your own company – with no distractions (not looking at your phone!) – gives your brain time to adjust.  Which is why meditation works – some of our latest tracks that incorporate EMDR focus on reducing anxiety and help the brain to focus without being distracted by invasive thoughts.  You will notice the sound moving from left to right as you listen.

EMDR uses “bilateral stimulation” which is left-to-right rapid eye movements or sounds which allow access to both sides of the brain to process thoughts.  EMDR by-passes the area of the brain that has become stuck due to the trauma and is preventing the left side of the brain from self-soothing the right side of the brain.  EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) works on the same principle of allowing both sides of the brain to work together to process traumatic memories.
