Meditation – with Binaural Beats

What are Binaural Beats?
A binaural beat is an illusion created by the brain when listening to two tones with slightly different frequencies at the same time.  The brain interprets the two tones as a beat of its own and the two tones align with the brain waves to produce a beat with a different frequency.  This frequency is the difference in hertz between the frequencies of the two tones.

When listening to binaural beats the brain activity matches the frequency set by the frequency of the beat.  This is called the frequency-following effect.  This means you can use binaural beats to entrain your mind to reach a certain mental state.

What are Monaural Beats?
Monaural Beats are a type of auditory beat that is created by mixing two signals with slightly different frequencies and applying them to both ears simultaneously

So what is the basic difference between Binaural beats and Monaural Beats?
Binaural beats are two different frequencies perceived by the brain – one frequency in the left ear and another to the right.  Monaural beats are two different frequencies that are mixed and then sent to both ears so both ears hear the same frequency.

What are Isochronic Tones?
Isochronic tones are a series of regular beats of a single tone that are used alongside monaural beats and binaural beats to entrain brain waves, they are often used to help people fall asleep or focus.  They work by turning the tones on and off very quickly creating a pulsing sound at speeds that are measured in Hertz.

So what are the Benefits of Binaural Beats?
Binaural beats have been explored in music and are sometimes used to help tune instruments, such as pianos and organs. More recently, they have been connected to potential health benefits.

It is claimed that binaural beats induce the same mental state as meditation but more quickly, they:

  • Reduce anxiety
  • Lower stress
  • Increase relaxation
  • Help manage pain
  • Foster positive moods
  • Promote creativity
  • Increase focus and concentration

Like meditation, binaural beats slow down the rate of brain aging and memory loss, promote mental health and increase attention span.  If you find meditation difficult, binaural beats can help by creating the same waves experienced during meditation.

Whilst most studies on the effects of binaural beats have been small there is increasing evidence that this auditory illusion does have health benefits, especially related to anxiety, mood and performance – see the studies at the end of this article.

Binaural beats won’t work for everyone, and they aren’t offered as a cure for any particular disorder – but they do offer relief – and an auditory escape from some conditions – here’s what our subscribers have found:

Years of SSRI’s. Years of Therapy. Years literally years. And nothing has brought me more comfort as this has within 12 minutes. I have literally just paused it at the 12 min mark just to write this. And now I’ll listen to the rest.

@jamestierney959

I have enjoyed several of the recordings on this site but this one is absolutely wonderful. Though this may not be designed for tinnitus relief, the high tones are offering great relief along with a quiet mind.

Effectiveness of music therapy on Disorders of Consciousness
This study combined a beat music with the patient’s favourite music in order to investigate the benefits of different types of music for patients with Disorders of Consciousness (DOC) – for example, people in a vegetative state following brain trauma such as stroke.

The study concluded that beat frequency therapy and music therapy could maximize the wakefulness promoting effect on DOC patients and music therapy combined with binaural therapy is more effective in stimulating DOC patients.

Auditory Beat Stimulation and its Effects on Cognition and Mood States
This report concluded binaural-beat stimulation reduced anxiety levels.

➤ Study 3: https://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?…

The study of binaural beats and isochronic tones
Reported that prolonged audio stimuli in repetitive and synchronized manner may induce changes in brain waves patterns.  There is therapeutic potential in neurology and psychophysiology from specific frequencies of brain waves due to their influence on specific frequencies of brain waves with consequent implications for mental health and homeostasis of brain neurotransmitters.

➤ Study 4: https://associationofanaesthetists-pu…

The study of the effects of binaural beat audio for people suffering from pre-operative anxiety.
There was a marked decrease in acute anxiety for participants who listened to audio rich in delta-wave entrainment.
